Two weeks ago I started my first week of my second semester of college. I was ready! I prepared as best I could so that the first week back would be peaceful and smooth! The Saturday before my vinyl business exploded and Bentley woke up in the middle of the night with an earache, followed the next morning with a bump under his ear (high cheek bone). So, needless to say what would follow wouldn't be the most smooth or peaceful week. Balancing vinyl work with school is hard and add on top of that trying to figure out the new schedule and how the professors work/what they expect, I was completely overwhelmed. Then, to add to that, Bentley's doctor was super concerned this his bump was mumps! She and I didn't see eye to eye and I kind of freaked out. I like to take a conservative approach to medical/dental care and try to keep everything as calm as possible. When she wanted us to immediately go get blood-work done, spoke of ct scans afterward, and was frantic that it all be done ASAP, I withdrew. I prayed, sought a blessing, talked with many others, and sought a second opinion the next day before I would do anything. After speaking (for a long time) with another doctor the next morning I felt reassured WHY the first doctor did what she did and we went for the blood-work. It was that day we named the unknown "mass" Mr. Bump (<--- second doctor spoke of her concern with the mass and how she had never seen anything like it in her time at this location).
We ended up at the hospital for 4.5 hours that afternoon just waiting for him to get the nurse who does pedi labs. It went as smooth as it possibly could and I know we had heavenly help that day because Bentley was amazing ,and surprising to us both, super brave and strong! The labs came back to show it was some type of virus and when we went for our follow up two days later (back to doctor #1) the bump was completely gone. Needless to say, the doctor still believed it was mumps (though it looked NOTHING like mumps) and lectured me on what she must do if the mumps labs came back positive. I left her office feeling super upset even though Mr. Bump was gone!
What I wish a doctor would have done to begin with was to say "let's give it a couple days and watch it and if it gets worse let's discuss it then. I hate extremes. Also, forgot to mention that at our follow-up the doctor ordered more blood-work in a weeks time to make sure the virus went away. I refused and she couldn't understand why. Ugh. She then insisted blood-work in a month and when they went to make the appointment I told them I'd call them when I checked my calendar…
My calendar shows that we will never be going back to their office.
Au Revoir Mr. Bump, we hope you NEVER come back, that was really scary, and created a week that was not ideal on top of everything else.
This photo was taken at the hospital and that was the side the bump was on (right under his ear on his cheek bone). I know the mass was a concern, it was a quarter size bump under the skin, however, I never expected mumps (neither did the second doctor).
It's been two weeks since then and the bump has not come back.
